It all started with a wet spot on the carpet outside of Eli's room. And yes, we 'make' our baby sleep in the basement. You do what you have to with 1600 square feet. And yes, maybe I'm just a little touchy about it ... after EVERYONE says, "You make YOUR BABY sleep IN THE BASEMENT?!?"
Anyhoo ... of course we blamed it on Maggie. But when it was a big and soggy spot just a couple of hours later we knew we were pointing the finger at the wrong culprit.
(Sidelight: Uncle Tuna is a jinx. The last time he visited we got locked out of the house. This time, a flood. And the 'Check Engine' light came on in my car. After he drove it. I'm just saying ...)
So what started with a visit from the plumber at 10:00pm on a Saturday night that revealed a leak down the wall from our kitchen sink quickly spiraled out of control into pipes (both under the basement floor and from the sidewalk to the street) that looked like this:
Take a closer look at that 1940s cast iron:
So it was one of those things that went from bad but easy to fix (i.e. no sewage) to the plumber scoping our entire sewage line and saying, "Well, it could be fine for years, or it could back up tomorrow, we just don't know." Ug. So this is what we did:
Highlights:
1. Eli sleeping thru the WHOLE plumber's visit on Saturday night.
2. Making a deal with the plumbers to come "off the books" the next Saturday to save 1/2 the cost of digging up our basement floor ... and having them work 10+ hours to get the job done!
3. Not one fight!
But it was THIS that made it all worthwhile:

Sweet crack! That totally sucks but I guess it is better than having raw sewage backup into your house at an unexpected moment. Although I don't know when I would ever "expect" raw sewage to start backing up and flooding the house. I am not understanding what is wrong with Eli sleeping in the basement. He will be begging to do it in 5 years anyway cause by then it will be "cool". Love you. Lori
